Brief
- When this client first approached CDS Kitchens, they had a rough layout in mind for this kitchen and features they wanted, but not much else!
Their primary request for the design brief was to repurpose their existing alcove space and create a walk-in pantry- a distinctive feature that would elevate the space both visually and functionally.
Space optimisation is always a priority in our custom designs. We wanted to make the walk-in pantry as impressive as it sounds. However, in the allocated space, there was an obtrusive chimney breast. A decision was made to leave the chimney breast in place, as opposed to removing it. To optimise this space, a full-height run of tall units was installed in front, cleverly concealing a 1m x 1m area (as seen in the design illustration). Later fitted with shelving, this hidden zone became a key feature of the generously sized walk-in pantry- an example of the unique design solutions we can devise, based on the space granted to us.
Another distinctive feature the client wanted us to include in the design brief was a sliding door mechanism. This required precise planning to ensure a seamless blend with the surrounding cabinetry.
Colour Theory
- Over several months, from first meeting to final installation, the kitchen design and colour scheme evolved significantly. We understand that choosing the colour of your forever kitchen can be a difficult task, so we gladly supported the client throughout. After sourcing and comparing samples from Egger and Formica, the client settled on Formica Marble Green and Just Rose for the door fronts. Under our advisement, this was paired with birch plywood wall units and a Formica Brite White laminated plywood worktop, creating a fresh and distinctive palette.
Design Challenges –
Other than the initial planning for the pantry, we didn’t run into any more challenges size wise. This particular client was fortunate to have a very generous space, giving us plenty of room to design without limitations. In this case, we needed to work out the best, most comfortable layout that integrated all the amenities; tall fridge, tall freezer, oven, combi oven dishwasher, large pull-out bin, etc.
Finalised Design –
The final design agreed with the client reflects a clean, modern, handleless kitchen, inspired by units the client saw during an early visit to the CDS workshop. We were able to guide them to an aesthetic they liked, which then shaped the direction of the entire project.
A noteworthy feature of the final layout is the inclusion of 22 drawers, far exceeding the typical number found in most kitchens. This was decided on to maximise storage efficiency and ensure all cupboards were easily accessible- eliminating the issue of lost or hard to reach areas in the backs of kitchen cabinets.
As a result of our collaborative design process, we created a striking, highly functional kitchen that combines thoughtful planning, tactile materials, and a visually cohesive finish.
Build & Installation –
When it came to bringing this design to life, there were some minor challenges that we needed to overcome.
The island (as seen in the images) had a downdraft hob, meaning air is vented down through the hob and out a pipe in the floor, rather than through an extractor above. To accommodate the flue and location of the pipe, there needed to be some modifications to the centre unit. Floor pipeage needed to be set out by builders very accurately and very far in advance, to ensure everything fit perfectly. By using our CAD software, we were able to precisely line our measurements up, so that installation ran without a hitch.
